Final Chapter
Dustin firmly believed in education; it is the basis for living. When he was diagnosed with cancer, it only enhanced his thirst for knowledge of the human body's abilities. All of the freedom that he has enjoyed the past six years while he was in remission - has been ripped away. This life he has now is not by choice; if he desires life, this is the protocol that he has to endure, and it comes with no guarantees. After receiving the diagnoses of Relapse Medulloblastoma Metastasis (a form of brain cancer), Dustin made the following quote.
"I want to fight, even if I don't make it, maybe it will help someone else. The way I look at it, I don't have a choice."
My hope is that this book inspires those of you who want to stay in the fight against a cancer diagnoses, even if it is against all odds. There is always a chance that a cure will be found at any given second. As we know, each one who has had to fight this devastating disease, no two cases are alike. In Dustin's opinion, no one is a textbook case; books are solely for reference when it comes to the human body.
Everyone will have his/her own individual case, own treatment options to select from, own obstacles and hurdles to climb over; but the battle remains the same, fighting to live, fighting for life, fighting for precious time, fighting for a cure.
My hope is that - RELAPSE will inspire cancer patients, caregivers, students, hospitals, doctors, nurses and staff. It take a tremendous, precise team of all individuals to fight this disease. The skilled physicians and staff, medications, hospitals and Dustin's perseverance allowed us to have Dustin with us for ten more years. We will be forever grateful.
